About The Grange Festival
Hidden in the orangerie of the neo-classical ruin of The Grange in Hampshire in the south west of England is an extraordinary surprise: a beautiful modern opera house.

The Grange sits proudly on its grassy plinth surveying its secret arcadian valley. A visit to The Grange Festival to see an opera is also a visit to this unforgettable setting, a grand Greek temple in its picturesque private park.

You can stroll around the park, wander into the house, sip sparkling wine from The Grange’s own vineyard on our Festival portico bar, dine in the house or sup in the park at your unhurried leisure during the long interval of the performance, and linger long after it has ended into the evening twilight.

The Grange Festival makes the most of all the unique opportunities which this historic location offers. When you come to the opera they are all yours to savour as well. As you take your seats amidst the elegance of the opera theatre, expect world class performances of opera and dance curated by Artistic Director, counter-tenor Michael Chance.

We open with the original soap opera, L’incoronazione di Poppea, an instant hit in Venice’s 1643 carnival season and now a big draw in opera houses the world over, Claudio Monteverdi’s hilarious and heartwrenching tale of imperial lust both for power and each other. The triumphant final duet Pur ti miro is a summation of the outrageous shenanigans which have delighted and shocked us from the start. The brilliant newish kids on the block La Nuova Musica are very welcome newcomers in the pit.

Puccini’s searing opera Tosca has been staple fare since it first electrified its Roman audience in 1900. Its explosive orchestral opening lifts us off our seats and we remain airborne. We welcome back the same winning directorial team who gave us Falstaff in 2019 together with a distinguished international cast.

We complete our operatic trio with WH Auden and Igor Stravinsky’s seminal take on William Hogarth’s London morality tale, The Rake’s Progress, as depicted in his eight engravings and paintings of contemporary London life. Familiar cast names abound in our new production by the acclaimed designer/director Antony McDonald.
